Gower! No, I believe the common hazelnut casing has is less wild and spiny. Also, these came from a (spectacular and) large tree, in contrast to the ones I know in Eastern Canada. I wish I had taken better notes; I was mesmerized at the time; these must be a breakaway hazel variety.

At first I thought they were some sort of sea anemones! I totally agree with you about chestnuts and hazelnuts - and just remembered the feeling of rubbing horse chestnuts against the side of my nose and polishing them until they gleamed.
